Trains, Tractors and Model A's!

Im so excited to announce our next meeting I have to do it here and now rather than waiting for the newsletter to come out!

Downtown Tavares is having their first ever Saturday Train Festival on January 5th! They have personally asked us to come and join in on the festivities! We will park our cars on the grass at the park and circle our chairs around to visit. There will be 3 different food vendors on site for you to purchase food, or you can bring your own. The downtown Tavares City Hall has graciously offered up their Chamber Room for our new President Bill Lumsden to hold his first meeting! Talk about spoiling him!

We will arrive between 10 and 10:30, circle up the model A's and then at about 11:00 walk one block over to city hall for our meeting. After our meeting we can come back circle around the chairs have something to eat and enjoy the festival that include $5 train rides all day! They ask that we keep our cars in the park until at least 2:00 however, we are welcome to stay thru the entire event and leave out between 4 and 5.

Other attractions are:
Motor railcar rides, model train display, Dj with classic cars on main street, antique tractor display, model train collector swap meet, antique railroad memorabilia, vintage postcard display and an art exhibit.

Howey Parade Dec 15th!

This Saturday Howey in the Hills will be having their Holiday Festival. This will have a Craft Show and Doggy Parade starting at 12:00 pm. The Cubscouts (that’s Garrett’s troop) will be the only food vendor tent with HotDogs, chips and drinks from 12-5.
The Parade itself will begin at 3:00pm sharp, so you will need to arrive in lineup sometime around 2:00pm. You can throw candy at this parade. And what makes this parade so special is that the route is along Lakeshore Drive. So it’s a beautiful parade route.
You can come and park your car early and walk down to the craft show, shop around and grab a hot dog from me – Ill be working at the cubscout tent! LOL

Our line up is #301 on East Laurel Avenue near the Mission Inn. (put that address in on Google Maps and it shows you right where to go)!

So decorate your cars, pray for no rain until after the parade, and see you there Saturday about 2:ish!

Old Florida Tags

I found a guy in Vero,
Howard Hinz 772-567-9121 FKO8S@earthlink.net
who sells old Florida tags. I got a 1930 one I want to register for my car.
You might put his name and email in the news letter in case anyone else wants one.

Holiday Banquet this Saturday!!!

Our Holiday Banquet is THIS Saturday
at the Lakeside Inn in beautiful downtown Mt Dora!
100 N Alexander Street ~ Mt Dora, FL 32757 ~ (352) 383-4101
http://www.lakeside-inn.com/
(model A’s will be parking on the lawn in front of the restaurant, modern cars will be parked to the right of the building.
There is ample parking for both if you arrive early enough).

We have our photographer going to be set up at 10:00 that morning on the lawn in front of the building. So we are asking that you show up between the hours of 10 and 11 to make sure that she has time to photograph each and every one of you. If you are in a modern car, no worries, she is going to pick a background that will make a beautiful picture of you as well.
(Once again, you are under NO obligation to purchase these photos and the club will be paying for the sitting fee for the photographer. We just want to encourage everyone to have their photo taken because this is mostly for our new directory that I will create after the first of the year.)

This is the meeting that you are encouraged to dress in period attire. This is not a requirement, however, it is a lot of fun and would make a great model A photo!

Don’t forget that Mt Dora is having their parade, while we are having our banquet, so you really want to come arrive on time so that the streets won’t be closed or crowded.

Seating for our banquet will begin about 11:15. Once everyone is seated in our private room, we will begin our meeting so please be prompt. After our meeting they will serve lunch and then immediately following lunch will be our extra special entertainment! According to Van they are a “fun rag time band”! I personally can not wait! Our photographer will be wandering about during the meeting and luncheon to take some candid shots – pretend you don’t see her! J Our festivities should wind down about 2:00.

See you all there!

Parades - GREAT showings!!!

Thank you to all of you who have participated in our parades thus far! This is when it is really fun to drive a model A!!!
So far we had our Umatilla parade, I heard it was great! With a large turnout of A's, Im not sure how many of you showed up, but I heard you also got a tour of an RV center and all went out to lunch together at the Mason Jar diner!

Then we had the Tavares evening parade with 7 model A's! After the parade we all followed the leader to the Soup to Nuts diner! That was a lot of fun!

Then I just heard news about the Altoona parade on Tuesday, they had 14 model A's show up on a weekday and were treated to a wonderful lunch by the facility! That is awesome!

Thanks to all show have participated and remember we have one more parade to do on the 15th of December. Thats our little Howey in the Hills parade. It's my favorite cause it's along lakeside in the afternoon! What a beautiful place to have a parade! More information to follow, but mark your calendars!

Barns, Buggies and BBGuns by Scott McLaughlin

Remember the stories that I put in the newsletter earlier this year by our own member Scott McLaughlin?! Well, Scott has compiled all of his little stories from his life's adventures into a book called Barns, Buggies and BBGuns. Alot of the stories are about his love of the model A.
This book will hopefully be ready after the first of the year and he is offering anyone in the club who would like to purchase one $4 off of the cover price for $15. And he will autograph it for you at a model A meeting.
I personally can not wait to our copy!
Just contact Scott or Brigid McLaughlin at

Pioneer Days - Leesburg

What started out as a rainy scary day ended up a beautiful day to be in downtown Leesburg at the Pioneer Days festival. We had 30 people and 15 model A's join us (7 model A's from Citrus Model A's). We were escorted to downtown by policemen driving very fast with lights! We lined up on Main Street, then had a wonderful lunch at Woodies! Buddy and Beth gave out nice raffle prizes that were donated by the local merchants.

After lunch we enjoyed the festival and the beautiful weather.

Oh and Bill McClelland brought out his - inrestoration - Model A! What a beautiful paintjob that car has - thanks Bill!

This is just to inform you that the club now has a new email address:

Please update your files thank you!

Model A Games were Dry and Fun!

What a great A day!
Our model A games went on and I think literally there was maybe 5 actual drops of rain, and other than that a perfect breezy sunny fall day!
The games were fun and went off a little different this time; we set up a grand stand for spectators to sit around and cheer or make fun of the participants! Wait until you hear who won the blind driver race!
And it was voted on to make this an annual event at the Lumsden's barn and field. What a great location with lots and lots of room!
The games were fun, there was some swapping going on, the food was great and the meeting went smoothly under the VP Tim's direction. (Barry had to be out of town). Then we held our elections and we have a new crop of officers for 2008 with the torch being officially passed on in December.

President: Bill Lumsden
Vice President: Buddy Pearce
Secretary: Sandi McCormack (returning)
Assistant Secretary: Beth Pearce
Treasurer: Dawn Stevens (returning)

Our volunteer coordinators are
Hospitality: Rosemary Lumsden
Newsletter: Sandi McCormack
Backup Newsletter: Dawn Stevens
Parades: Beebe's
Historian: Mal Colby
Technical Coordinator position and Tour directory positions still yet to be officially assigned.

Model A meeting in the Rain????

Hi Model A’ers,

I know you are all waking up and seeing the forecasts and wondering, “Hmmm, ARE we still going to have a meeting today? How could we possibly have model A games in the rain?”

Well of Course we are! Model A Games only get more fun in the rain! LOL
And we still need to elect new leaders – so what if they are all WET!

Seriously, the forecasters say it’s only 50% chance of rain. So, if YOU don’t feel comfortable driving your model A in 50% chance of rain, then drive your modern car – Bill says you can drive a blind course in your modern car too and we will all make fun of you just the same if not more! LOL

And – it’s FREE FOOD – that alone should bring you out!

So Model A, Modern Car, Horse and Buggy, Bicycle built for Two, Row Boat, whatever means of transportation you choose, we will see you there in Clermont at Bill’s Barn!

Sandi McCormack, secretary (only for one more day unless you are there to vote for me!)

Model A Games at meeting this Saturday!

Our October meeting is this coming Saturday the 6th of October!
It's going to be held at Bill & Rosemary Lumsdens property in Clermont. The club and Rosemary are providing a BBQ lunch for everyone! This day will be set up for fun! The guys are working on quirky model A games, we will also have an area designated for you guys to clear out your extra parts and set up a SWAP meet, so bring your stuff, a blanket or a table and be ready to wheel and deal!
Oh and Dont forget to bring your chairs to sit on cause space they have... chairs they do NOT!
Show up about 10:ish, we'll get the games rolling about 10:30 and lunch will be around 1:00. See Ya There!

Directions: in Clermont from the intersection of 27 and 50. Go South on 27 to 2nd light at Johns Lake Road. Take a left onto Johns Lake Road (at Walmart) and travel thru the intersection of Hancock Road. Go exactly 1/2 mile further to CW Harrell Road which will be on your right. There you will see the barn on your right.

Beckett Bash was another success!

We had about 107 people present and 37 model A's. Food was great and it was great to see friends from other clubs there to join us!
Thank you to all who made it. Thank you to to Don and Sultana's sister for doing such a great job with her silhouettes! Thank you to all the helpers that helped set up and break down.
And we look forward to doing it again next year.

5th Annual Don Beckett & Friends Birthday Bash

It's almost here! Can't you feel the excitement?!
Come one Come all to the celebration this Saturday morning about 10:30 at Hickory Point Park.
Bring yourself, bring your family, bring your A (if you can, if not come anyways) and have fun!
Remember, you don't have to bring any food Don Beckett is supplying all the food. If you wish to bring anything you may bring extra drinks or desserts. Also, Sandi is still looking for a couple larger coolers with ice... so if you want to bring that instead, call or EMAIL.
Now we do not REQUIRE an RSVP however, for my food purchasing purposes, if you think you are going to be here this Saturday, could you just send me a quick email unless you have called me in the past week. That would be awesome!! Thanks: EMAIL
Hickory Point park is on the north side of the HWY 19 Bridge between Howey and Tavares. You do not have to pay to come in the gate. And just as an added little note, we are on the bottom floor again and there IS another party at the same time on the top floor. So parking is going to be an issue. We are NOT allowed this year to park in the middle of the drive like we did last year, nor on the grass (they called me today:/). We have to use parking spaces. There is an axillary parking area so there will be plenty of room, but if you want a close up space, come early!

Oliver Makes Food Drive Run

Oliver, the McCormack's temperamental AA stake bed stepped up to the plate Sunday to help out with a 'Fill the Truck' Food drive a Morrison Methodist Church in Leesburg. We were contacted by John Harrington, the pastor who conducted services for our John O'Shea and remembered how neat all the Model A's were. He asked if we could have a truck that his church could fill up. After showing him some pictures, he thought that Oliver would be a sufficient challenge.

Well fill up the truck they did, and off we went to the Leesburg Food Bank, and after all was tallied, we had 3,123 pounds of food, 123 pounds over Oliver's design weight limit. The old boy groaned and rattled and almost didn't have enough power to get up the street, but he made it. Oliver originally hauled grain out South Dakota during the Great Depression to feed those who hungered, and over 75 years later, answered the call once again.

Model A Making Great Progress!

We just received word from Bill McClelland that his tudor has a nice shiny coat of paint and is getting closer by the minute to an unveiling party! Bill's Brother has done the body work and painting and it looks fabulous... we can't wait to see the finished version. If you'll recall, this was the tudor 'in anticipation' that was at our May meeting in Umatilla.

Homosassa Tour

Thanks to all who venture out for the car show in Homosassa Springs today. We had a total of 6 families at the show, Speedy Dave Baker even had the honor of passing a solitary Model T ambling out in the countryside. Despite a frog choker of a rain and some heat, it was a nice show with many T's and A's present.

Mt Dora Cruise In Invitation

I received this email from the organizer of Mt Dora 3rd Thursday nights:

Come on over to the Mount Dora Cool HOEDOWN Car Show next Thursday, Sept. 20, from 5-9 in downtown Mount Dora. Put on those tight fitting jeans, western shirt, and cowboy hat (or cowgirl hat) and look for tons of fun. There will be at least two bands performing, the Blackwater Creek Bluegrass Band at 3rd Ave and Donnelly St. and the 2A.M. Band playing contemporary rock at 4th Ave and Baker St., both in the general area of the car show. A list of restaurants with their specials and the prices will be in your goodie bag for those wanting to have dinner at the show. Talk about door prizes. As with the June show, these aren't your typical car show prizes of cleaning cloths, polish, etc. No way. These are from your downtown Mount Dora merchants and are they neat. How about a 14 karat gold slide (like a pendant) for a necklace, a $100 value. Like to eat out, there are 2 brunch certificates to the Lakeside Inn. For the golfer in you, a 15" golf player statue. There are several bottles of wine, 2 gift baskets with a $75 value in each, and 2 books for Florida adventures travel just to name a few others. Many of the downtown merchants will be open for business for those who like to look through the varied and unique stores they have. It's a HOEDOWN CAR SHOW so make plans now to attend and you won't be disappointed. I will give directions to the downtown area next week but for those of you familiar with the area, it's a block each way from 4th Ave. and Donnelly St, right in the heart of downtown. Can't make it by 5? Don't worry. There will be plenty of parking and you are welcome whenever you can make it. If you are thinking of coming, I would appreciate your letting me know so I can plan accordingly. Ya' all come over now, ya hear. Lowell

At our August meeting Sandi made a proposal for us to have a Photographer (Suzie) who takes vintage photos be present at our Christmas Banquet at Lakeside Inn in Mt Dora. She will be set up to take photos of you and your model A. If you do not have a model A she can take your photo with a nice backdrop or with others' model A's.
After that day she will post the photos on a website that will be available for anyone in our group to view and purchase any photo that you wish. You will not be contacted or pressured into purchasing any photos. But they will be there for you to purchase if you wish.

Parades - Line ups and information

You should try to have your cars decorated in a patriotic theme - although this is not a requirement. I have not read anything that keeps you from throwing candy if you wish too. This also is not a requirement but if you want to I guess you can. I know Tavares is big on throwing candy.

Mt Dora Parade:
We will need to be at the staging area on 7th & Donnelly at 1 PM. Parade marshals will be on hand to answer any questions. Our Line up Number will be 71-75 and it will be near the corner on McDonald between 8th and 9th and on 9th between McDonald and Alexander. (I know sounds confusing - but that is what they told me? Im guessing that wraps around a corner or something). The road is supposed to be marked and the parade will begin at 2:00 pm.

Tavares Parade:
We will need to be in lineup between 3:30 and 4:15. Enter from HWY 19 only, onto West Main Street. Our lineup number for Tavares will be 111-118 (4th road on left). The parade will begin at 5:00 pm.

Antique Car Show - Mt Dora - 6/21

Our club has been invited to join in on Mt Dora's 3rd Thursday downtown festival.
The Downtown Merchant Association has decided to do a 3rd Thursday celebration every month this summer, starting next Thursday the 21st from 5-9pm. They will have 2 bands and several fun activities for families in the park and food vendors as well.
The first 50 antique cars in line up will receive a GOODY BAG from the downtown merchants as well as a raffle ticket. Some of the downtown merchants have donated door prizes for the raffle only to car drivers including: several restaurant gift certificates, vera bradley purse, wine, etc.

If you do not wish to keep your car there until 9 just inform the traffic directors and they will put you on a cross street -( not by yourself - it's all planned out.) See directors at corner of Donnely Street and 9th Street in downtown Mt Dora.

This is not a club planned activity, Im just passing on an invitation sent to our club members.

Officers Needed for next year!

Heart Club Members - We are looking for a handful of volunteers to step forward and become officers for next year. Right now we have a group of officers who are willing to help out and support the new leaders for next year , so dont feel that you will be thrown in front and not know what you are doing. As as matter of fact, if you come forward now we will gladly let you in on all that we do now leading up to the change over.
This months newsletter will have a complete description of job duties for each officer. Take a look and see where you can step in and help.

4th of July Parade

We are waiting for confirmation and line up information but keep Wednesday evening the 4th of July available if you are in town. The parade will be in downtown Tavares and we will probably line up about 3:30ish. Details provided when received.

No Official Meeting in July

As per tradition, we have no offical Heart Club Meeting in July!
